Biosecurity and Conservation

Rotoroa Island is a regenerating conservation area. Over 25 species of bird life have been recorded on the island, including endangered breeding pairs. This means that visitors to the island are asked to abide by biosecurity measures to help maintain the island's current pest free status.

When you visit Rotoroa Island, please:

  • Check bags for rodents, insects and other pests prior to boarding the ferry;
  • Leave your dog on board your vessel if visiting by boat as no dogs or domestic animals are permitted as they may endanger the island's wildlife;
  • Carry food in sealed, rodent proof containers free from insects. Ideally plastic containers;
  • Bags must be sealed - no plastic bags, open top bags, or supermarket bags;
  • Check boots are clean - no soil or seeds in laces or treads;
  • Leave your bicycle at home.

Thank you for your cooperation.
