Ann Shelton Photographs

  • Heritage & Art

New Zealand artist Ann Shelton was invited to document Rotoroa Island and it's buildings as they were found, right after the Rotoroa Island Trust took on the 99-year lease.

Ann Shelton's work Room Room is a series of photos that were taken inside the island’s Phoenix wing before it was demolished. The Phoenix wing was part of the historic rehabilitation centre on Rotoroa Island, run by The Salvation Army for almost 100 years. These evocative photographs of the inside of the patients’ rooms capture the poignancy and challenge of life on the island during that period.

Here you can also see Ann's ' From the Island' series of works using shields that were awarded to the winners in games during the Sallies' days. The shields were competed for by groups of patients in games which were part of their recovery process.

For a little detail, Ann shares her experience on Rotoroa with Radio NZ's Arts on Sunday Programme.
