About Us

Rotoroa Island is an 80 hectare privately owned and run wildlife sanctuary open to the public and is located in the southern Hauraki Gulf. The island is managed by the Rotoroa Island Trust and owned by the Salvation Army. An extensive restoration programme was undertaken in the mid 2000’s when over 350,000 native trees were planted, animal pests eradicated, native species were able to recover and be translocated (e.g. takahē, tieke, Coromandel brown kiwi) and facilities renovated or built to celebrate the Salvation Army history and open the island to the public.

About the Roles

Our Island Managers (family couple) are moving on at the end of August this year after 5 years of service. We are recruiting now so that there can be a seamless settling in period including a 2-month handover period for both roles starting on July 1.

Two roles are available: –

  • A full-time manager role
  • A part time assistant manager role.

About You – Key Attributes

The two jobs we have available are for hardworking, highly organised, and adaptable people who love the outdoors. You must be very practical and prepared to do what it takes to get the job done but responsibly and safely.

Island life often turns up multiple competing challenges in a day so you must be calm and organised under pressure as well as being good at constantly reprioritising.

You must also be able to demonstrate that you can live in a semi remote location where you may not be able to leave for long periods especially during winter.

Experience managing people in a positive and fair manner and leading by example is essential.

One appointee should ideally have experience in safely operating medium size power boats.

Duties and Responsibilities

The roles include the following key work areas:

  • Managing seasonal staff, relieving rangers and volunteers (individuals and groups) as well as contractors
  • Developing and implementing a weekly work programme to a set annual budget
  • Being the front face of the Rotoroa Island Trust (visitor liaison, hospitality, support and management including a small kiosk)
  • Managing facilities and infrastructure (requires a level of knowledge and experience in machinery, and infrastructure and being able to problem solve on the ground – (getting contractors out to effect repairs is rarely the first option)
  • Grounds maintenance, rubbish management, recycling, and removal
  • Cleaning, laundry, and management of 3 accommodation houses and an 18 bed bunkhouse/hostel
  • Maintaining biosecurity devices to minimise reinvasion and detect swimming rats.
  • Day to day management of native species (shorebird, takahe and kiwi management)
  • Weed management (both around public areas and accommodation as well as conservation weeds)
  • Health and Safety and emergency management (including gear and equipment management)
  • Computer based record keeping, office administration, bookkeeping, ordering supplies well before they run out.

If you can tick a good few of the boxes above under key attributes and can demonstrate this experience and knowledge in a scenario-based interview format, then please apply.

Note: If appointed to the job you must be able to commit to the start date and we would also like the successful appointees to commit to a minimum 2-year contract.
